North Velebit National Park

This was one big day. A lovely drive though the countryside and up up into the park - gravel road and dark forest then open meadow up where the snow gets thick. We had bought our picnic lunch and were heading for the first mountain hut , stage one of a multiday walk if you could stand sleeping all cosy up high in the mountains - I have two boys to carry my gear - but would it all work out in the end without tears ?

Anyway this is the scenery we had to put up with...

And the hut was all cosy and very well set up....

The trail was pretty much deserted, we only met a few groups along the way- more older Germans to put us to shame as they strode along all walking poles and loud voices. There were some scary high bits but it was Ok if you didn't look down. The walking got pretty tiring as it was a lot of loose stone out on the limestone mountain side but then the soft forest floor was just soo soft when we got back to it.

Then a long drive ( for Vlad ) down over the Velebit to the Dalmation coast - alot more rocks but very pretty in its own way. Our view from breakfast is spectacular. So different from Aussie seaside resorts with all those white rocks

See you soon

Love Wendy and Graeme

  1. Mt Panorama will never be the same, no challenge at all, no rough stones underfoot, no sharp drops on the side, not as much beautiful scenery, may be the gun club would let you stay overnight!!! although you may prefer to roll down the hill into your own comfortable bed. Your photos and descriptions are just beautiful, what a wonderful trip. We are looking forward to Paklenica. xox
