I'm going to call him Vlad for short and I imagine he'll be mighty glad when our week is up - he's 29, single and was an hour late this morning to pick us up but was pretty easy to forgive. Our stop today was the Plitvice Lakes, about 2 hours out of Zagreb in our mini van after a pretty drive though the countryside. 16 blue/green lakes and many cascades and waterfalls all limestone clear and cold.
The paths and walkways wandered along past caves and through forest - just like in Lord of the Rings when Frodo and Sam take off on their own across the river I kept expecting Orcs or Hobbits to pop out from amongst the trees - very serene and beautiful except for the hoards of tourists instead of goblins !!! We walked for about 3 hours and also had a boat ride and a bus ride to round off the day.
Now we are in a very small B & B style guesthouse - plain but warm and cosy. I think I've buggered up the menu as vegetarians are a bit of a novelty here what with the cafes doing lambs on spits for the roadside trade and also in the National Park for the many picnickers.
Will sleep good tonight with the sound of a rushing waterfall just outside the house - a lovely place to swim if only it were warmer and we weren't so very very worn out.
Love Wendy and Graeme
How beautiful! Just like fairyland, what a wonderful place to walk. What do vegetarians eat in lamb land? xoxo
